Frequently Answered Questions
We enjoy receiving email from students and young designers, but please check here first to see if your question has already been answered.

What do you look for in a portfolio?
We look for a point of view. I can’t remember how many portfolios we’ve looked at for the simple fact that most of them just aren’t memorable. That doesn’t mean you need some gimmick or fancy format, it just means that you need to be about something. Decent type skill don't hurt either.

Can I interview you for a school project?

Generally, yes, we're happy to support and share ideas with students for specific projects. Here some tips for doing it right:

  1. Email us well in advance of your deadline.
  2. Tell us a little about your assignment and why (specifically) you wish to speak with us.
  3. Don't just send us a list of questions and expect us to answer all of them.
  4. Promise to send us a copy of your finished project and let us know how you did.

Can I get some samples of your work?
While we do love to share, our sample archives are limited. Sorry.

Where do you find inspiration?
This is the number one question we’re asked. It seems like the requisite opener for any design interview. The real answer is the same for everyone: everywhere. Still, there are specific references and moments that make their way into our work. We’re working on an inspiration gallery, so please check back soon.

Will you sign a copy of my book?
I feel a little self conscious putting this up here, but I’m asked this question with surprising frequency. Yes, I’ll gadly sign a book if we happen to cross paths some place. Just introduce yourself.

I ask other designers to sign my copies of their books all the time.

Drop Off Policy
You're welcome to drop off your book on Thursdays before 1PM. Generally, you can pick it up the following Monday. Please call ahead to confirm before dropping off or picking up. We regret that we can't spend time speaking with everyone personally, so please understand that you're simply dropping off your book. We do look at every single protfolio we receive, and we'll keep your information on file if we think you're a good match.

NB: MINE will treat your work with respect and care, but we accept no responsibility for lost or damaged portfolios.
Applying
Send a cover letter, resume and a link to representative work to internships@minesf.com. If you send it to any other address we'll
know you weren't paying attention. Please do not send large
files in your email. It clogs our server and makes us unhappy.
That's not a good way to start out. We try to reply to everyone,
but it may take a while.

Internships
MINE™ is a teaching studio. We accept interns for spring and
fall semesters, and sometimes for the summer. Our internships
are usually filled six to twelve months in advance, but don’t let
that discourage you. We’re always interested in fresh work and
new perspectives.
