MTV announced this week that they are updating their 30-year old logo. That’s not to say that the old logo had been stagnant all that time — indeed they were one of the first to embrace the idea that a mark could fluid and ever changing. Over the years the iconic MTV monogram has been rendered in a variety of colors, patterns, textures and media.
This new iteration continues to embrace that dynamic approach, but also brings a measure of refinement and sophistication to the system.
Like the recently announced identities for AOL, the city of Melbourne, and MAD, the characters MTV will serve as a container for a range of expressive photography and (one presumes) video.
For those of you pining for the original, Frank Olinksy — one of the designers of the original logo — tells the story of its creation on his website.
