French artist Jocelyne Grivaud recreates well known art using Barbie as her muse. We’ve all seen the Mona Lisa rendered in jelly beans, balloons, LEGO, etc. so seeing it in Barbie form doesn’t really do much for me. Seeing Glaser’s Dylan poster recreated in Mattel-brand plastic gives me a bit more of a tickle, however.
But the most provocative image is that of Aphrodite. The natural proportions and relaxed pose that make that sculpture so appealing are distorted to accommodate Barbie’s grotesquely caricatured form. It’s hard to say if this was the artist’s intent, but of all the images it makes the most significant commentary:
